Jack Roberts Memorial Scholarship
To honor the heritage of art in Redstone and to ensure a passion for art stays in our treasured and beautiful community the Redstone Art Foundation awards annual scholarships.
The Redstone Art Foundation has expanded the eligibility criteria for the Jack Roberts Memorial Scholarship to include university/college students enrolled in art courses as well as community members interested in taking non-academic classes and workshops in the arts.
Who
There are 2 types of scholarships.
The first is for graduating seniors from local Roaring Fork Valley high schools who plan to study and pursue art as a major or minor field.
The second is for community members interested in taking non-academic classes and workshops in the arts.
How it Started
This scholarship fund was set up using $1,245 of seed money from the Jack Roberts Memorial. Jake Roberts was an American regional painter who built and lived in his cabin/studio south of Redstone for over 30 years.
How much is awarded
The amount of funds awarded for scholarships is based on the number of recipients as well as the profits generated from our annual Redstone Art Show. Over the last 19 years, we have awarded over $70,500 in scholarship money!
Selection Process
Scholarships are awarded based on the quality of work and application submission. Online applications are being accepted.

The Life and Work of Jack Roberts
Born in Oklahoma, Jack Roberts attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and studied in New York under the tutelage of renowned artist and teacher Harvey Dunn. Following Dunn’s advice to seek “the essential spirit” of painting, Jack moved to Colorado in 1947, seeking inspiration for his work. In western Colorado his jobs as a railroad bridge gang worker and ranch ditch rider influenced his early paintings.
In 1969, as his reputation grew and his artistic style evolved, Jack built his cabin/studio south of Redstone. There, for thirty years, he created an average of forty paintings a year—exuberant, colorful portrayals ranging from cowboys and Indians to newspaper editors and historical expeditions. While capturing the “spirit” of his characters, he also approached each subject with attention to detail and historical accuracy.
His interest in realism and everyday subjects established his reputation as an American regionalist painter. He was both artist and historian.
